specialized educational programs for
children from birth to age five.
The Gift Basket Luncheon was held
in preparation for the upcoming Jewel

Louis Anthony Jewelers to support TELI
and its commitment to being Allegheny

Earth Awareness Day
This spring, approximately 100
Canonsburg Middle School students in
Advanced Language Arts and Advanced
English classes participated in Earth
Awareness Day. The day was funded by
a MAC grant awarded to Mrs. Julie
Gaetano, Advanced English 8, and
Mrs. Mindy Wright, Advanced Language
Arts 7. Students rotated through four
stations to explore various issues
affecting our planet.
Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
presented an interactive program on
endangered species and their precious
habitats. Students discovered more
about endangered animals and the
threats they face along with meeting a
chinchilla, a ball python, and an owl.
The Carnegie Science Center
contributed by bringing an 18-foot
inflatable globe to provide an
immersive experience in geography
and environmental science. Students
entered the giant balloon and saw the
Earth from inside and out. This program
provided insight into environmental
issues that impact the world and
opened discussion for ways that CMS
students can make a difference.
Students got a hands-on demonstration
of the harmful effects of global warming
in a lab lead by CMS science teachers,
Brian Cornali and Jason Colbert.
Students recorded the temperature
effect of a greenhouse gas (carbon
dioxide - CO2) on a simulated
atmosphere and compared this data
against an atmosphere lacking CO2,
using carbon dioxide/temperature meters.
