Operation Helping Hands
To show they care and share,
Borland Manor Elementary
School students in the
Canon-McMillan School
District held a Backpack Drive
and collected more than 140
new and used backpacks for
Operation Helping Hands.
The backpacks, along with
toothbrushes and toothpaste,
were distributed to the
students in the School of
Angels in Taisha, Ecuador.
The Borland Manor PFO also
donated money to purchase
medical supplies for this trip.
Joining forces with Borland
Manor this year was pediatric
dentist, Dr. James Goldsmith,
who donated a Spanishlanguage
tooth-brushing DVD
to teach students how to
brush their teeth properly.

Operation Helping Hands is
an international humanitarian
relief program that provides
medical and surgical assistance
to the poor, especially
children, in developing
countries where basic medical
care is nonexistent. The
program was founded in 1999
by Drs. Michel Aboutanos, Tim
Broderick, and Jay Yelon, of
the Medical College of Virginia
Hospitals. Erin Murdock,
Canon-McMillan High School
graduate, was selected by Dr.
Aboutanos to be group leader
for this year’s OHH trip. Erin
is a medical student at the
Medical College of Virginia
Hospitals of Virginia
Commonwealth University.

along with seven medical
students, traveled to Ecuador
to deliver the supplies and
spend time teaching and
working with the students,
teachers, and parents in the area.
